NOVEMBER 2000

Dear Nature Friends,
Greetings from the heart of Tanjung Benoa. I hope this note finds you all well. Far too long you have not heard from us about our and your efforts to help our favorite endangered marine reptiles. Sometimes I feel that with every step forward, we go two steps back.

OLIVE RIDDLEY NESTING SEASON

Unfortunately this year we were able to secure only about 1400 eggs from turtles, which come to nest on the beach in Jimbaran. From this 1400 eggs about 800 babies hatched, and were then later released. During the same time we brought at the markets in Jimbaran a total of 16 fully grown adult olive riddleys, which were caught either during their nesting process, or in open waters.
Olive riddleys unlike green turtles can never be kept in captivity and were immediately released on some isolated beaches.

PROTECTION ACTIVITIES  TO STOP THE TRADE

Over the past months several interesting events took place mainly at the turtle market in Tanjung Benoa. Not only did different environmental groups launched protests against the trade of green turtles, but also the government had several meetings with traders and fisherman with two aims, for one to totally stop the harvest of sea turtles, (after all it is against the law) and for two to implement a quota of 5000 turtles per year. (Think about the currant harvest of 25000 annually).

DEMONSTRATION

Consequently also the traders launched a protest against the WWF and the government. Please find in the attachment a translated newspaper story from the Bali Post, Tuesday November 7, 2000.

Video Shoot

Sunday, November 19, 2000
We were honored by a visit of a film team who is preparing an animal discovery show for the above cable TV station. The filming included the work which we do with turtles, and the preparation of some authentic Indonesian dishes. (Gado Gado)
The show should be on air in about 4-5 months.

JONATHAN HEIGHES PRODUCTION

After months of waiting, a first 11 minute video has finally arrived. This short video explains in a very realistic and sad way of all the obstacles we and the turtles face here in Bali. There is a total of about 30 hours of first class footage available, which we would like to cut down into a one hour video. However to do so we do require help of a production house which would be interested to support this caring project.

Lets hope the baby on the back will grow as big and strong as mama
However we will have our 11 minutes documentary available on CD Rom by early February. All contributions from the sale of this video will go towards the protection of more turtles. Should you be interested to purchase this video, then please do contact our office directly.
Cost US$10.00, or about the same prize what a 2kg Green Turtle costs at the market.
So with the sale of every video we will save one turtle.
Do you want to save one too????!!!! please
Dear friends, as you can see, lots of encouraging vents are happening towards a hopefully happy ending. To end this little update, I would like to share with you a very positive turnaround. Many of you who joined me in the passed to the markets n Jimbaran will remember the lady who was selling for years turtle satays.
For what ever reason, since about two months there is no longer turtle on the satay skewers, but little chunks of pork.

THERE IS HOPE! ! !.....
With best personal regards from
